San Miguelers visit Ellis Island

After intense study of the history of immigration, 8th grade teacher, Ms. Chris Jagolinzer, decided to bring history to life by taking the boys to the museum currently housed in the former immigration building on Ellis Island NY. After an early start on Thursday, Nov. 9, the boys enjoyed the beautiful weather as they crossed the New York Harbor by ferry. Students made connections with the names, events and places they had studied in class. They stood in awe in the huge auditorium where so many new immigrants had started a new life. A picnic lunch at the base of the Statue of Liberty was a powerful culminating activity to their unit of study and one that will not be soon forgotten.
